The Stanford Top 2% Scientists list is a comprehensive database compiled by researchers at Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier, highlighting the world's most influential scientists based on standardized citation metrics. It identifies the top 100,000 scientists globally – or those achieving a percentile rank of 2% or higher in their sub-field – using a composite c-score that incorporates citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, and other indicators. Scientists are categorized across 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields, with the list updated annually to recognize sustained impact and excellence in research.
Clarivate's Highly Cited Researchers programme annually honours scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated exceptional influence through their work. Selection is based on authoring multiple Highly Cited Papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for their field and publication year in the Web of Science over the past decade. This elite group, representing about 1 in 1,000 researchers worldwide, undergoes rigourous quantitative and qualitative review to ensure broad and significant impact, with over 7,000 designations across 21 fields and one cross-field category in the 2025 list.
